Common Questions about MA Meetings
What happens at an MA meeting?
People discuss their problems with marijuana, what they did to recover, and what life is like now. We have found that as a group we can achieve for ourselves results which, as individuals, we failed at repeatedly.
What commitments do I make by attending an MA meeting?
None. There are no records or files and you need not disclose anything about yourself if you don't want to. No one will bother you if you do not wish to come back.
How much does MA membership cost?
Nothing. There are no dues or fees. MA meetings pay their bills through the voluntary contributions of those attending. A basket is passed at each meeting for contributions. Marijuana Anonymous is completely self supporting.
Is there much talk about God?
Most MA members come to believe in the idea of a power greater than themselves. Some call this power God. There is room in MA for members of all beliefs, or no belief at all. The idea of God is mentioned in the Twelve Steps, and each member is free to determine what that actually means to them.
Is MA a religious organisation?
No, nor is it connected with any religious organisation, sect, denomination, politics, institution, or any other organisation whatsoever.
Can I set up a new MA meeting in my area?
Absolutely. Contact us and we'll be happy to assist. We'll also list your new meeting up on this webpage once it is well established.
Starting an MA meeting carries with it a lot of responsibilities, including: finding a location for the meeting; negotiating a weekly or monthly rent for the meeting; letting the surrounding community know that an MA meeting is starting; and attending the meeting weekly, at least until it gets off the ground. We can provide you with ideas for all of the above, but the majority of the work is yours to do.
You don't have to be clean and sober for any set length of time to start an MA meeting, but you do need to be clean from marijuana. If you are very newly sober, starting a meeting can be a daunting proposition; especially if there are no other MA meetings in your area. You may want to consider attending other 12 Step meetings to learn more about the program and to build up some sobriety time before you try to start a meeting yourself.
One addict helping another is a fundamental part of our program, so please don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
